COLORS

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said "I look to a day when people will not be judged by

the color of their skin, but the content of their character" As a black American, who began

college at Moorehouse College at the young age of fifteen. He believed in equal rights for all men

and women, black and white. He truly dreamed and fought whole heartily for equal rights for

blacks.

This quote and his dream of equal rights for all blacks and whites, has touched me deep and

dear. My son is biracial, ( part African American ). I draw each mornings breathe for my son, He

is a miracle, due to my multiple health problems.

When my son Matthew started his first days in public school, he learned about Dr. King's

dream. Matthew was so captivated over the history about Dr. king, that day in school, as we

walked home from Matthew's bus stop that day he said "Mommy Dr. King loved everyone like

me" Meaning ( my take then and now ) his color of skin and accepting everyone.

That day contained a lot of questions and talking. Matthew placed his little hand to mine during

a certain question, "why is my hand so tan and yours white?" During our long talk I was

unaware that in his little heart and mind were race issues and hate. He never understood the

difference. To me that is a child's innocence of "color blindness".

Matthew said he wished he could have met Dr. King. He knew Dr. King loved him ( Matthew )

for being himself not because of black or white skin. His character is what made it matter.

Matthew's character is much respect, open minded and joyful. At times he sees, and feels

singled out for his skin color. To this day at sixteen his character remains the same, with usual

teenage wants and likes. And yes he still runs into racism.

Matthew has character because he accepts all opinions. Most of all he is very strong intelligent

young man. I am honored and proud to have such a young boy grow into a well rounded fine

young man. I love his self character and how he accepts and deals with difference in opinions As

Dr. King wanted, would have. His dream is a dream come true thirty years later, and still

working through.
